Seattle Will Host the 19th Annual World Basketball Invitational Tournament for Chinese in November 2003

By Sijou Miyoko

( March 3,2003, Bellevue, Washington)Emerald City Seattle in the State of Washington will host the 19th Annual World Basketball Invitational Tournament (WBIT)for Chinese during November 27th through 30th in 2003.

This is really a big event for the State of Washington and Seattle because it will not only make Seattle once again the focus of the world media after WTO in 1999, but also will bring economic benefits to the local community when more than 2000 basketball players and their family members visit Seattle. However, the social and cultural significance is far greater than the economic benefits.

Mr.Tung-Sheng Wang, Senior Executive Officer of the Chinese Athletic Association of NW America (WBIT, a 503c non profit) said: " We are pleased and honored to have opportunity to host this event. Since 1985, this annual Basketball Tournament has been held continuously without interruption in major cities around the world. Most recently in Yangzhou, near Shanghai, China (2002), Bangkok, Thailand (2001) and Sidney, Australia (2000). More than 125 teams from all over the world participated in such event, which has generated tourism income for hosting cities and is welcomed by local governments."

Wang added: " More than 2,600 players participated in Yangzhou event last year. Men and women teams between the ages of 35-70 were involved. Yao Ming's father played for a Shanghai team and he has confirmed that he will be attending Seattle Event this year."

For the last 18 years, basketball players of Chinese descent in major cities around the world have been participating in this Invitational Tournament because of its noble goals in realizing the true Olympic spirit. The purpose to host this event is to promote the game of basketball and reinforce friendship and harmony among people of Chinese descent around the world, and reinforce their unity under Chinese culture and heritage.

Jerry Lee, CEO of MulvannyG2 Architecture and one of the major sponsors and organizers said: " The social and cultural significance for us to host this event is to carry on the Olympic spirit. It is important to win in the Olympic Games, but it is more important to participate in the game, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph, but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well."

Jerry Lee is a very successful entrepreneur and famous philanthropist in Bellevue, who has made great contribution to the coming event and serves as WBIT Chairman. Lee said: " Through our Annual Basketball Tournament, we have opportunity to make new friends, exchange our ideas and gifts and share our common culture which has been lasting for over five thousands years. Our common philosophical roots are in the spirit of Lao Tzu's teaching, that is creation without possession, action without self-assertions and development without domination. This is the essence of our life which consists of compassion kindness, and good will. "

Mr. Lee illustrated more concretely about the significance of the event: "Before each game, all players exchange small gifts from different countries. When the game is over and the players return to their homelands, the gift becomes a token of friendship and carries the sweet memory of the event, people and hosting cities. All these players are Good-Will Ambassadors of their respective countries. "

Mr. Cordel Lui, another WBIT Officer and owner of Yuen Lui Studios said: " For all players, there are similarities and differences. All players are successful businessmen and we have something in common, that is we are all Chinese descents. However, it is also our common practice to interact with people from different countries who have commonalities, and at the same times, have differences in languages, customs, lifestyles and clothes. Diversity is also an outstanding character for this event. We celebrate our commonalities, but we also embrace diversity."

Many players and families will begin showing up during the weekend of 11/22. There will be a Team representatives and rules review function, on the evening of 11/26. Opening and welcoming ceremonies will be the morning of 11/27 and the closing ceremonies and awards banquet will be held, in either the host hotel or the Washington State Convention Center on the evening of 11/30. WBIT anticipate about 1,200+ for this event. The Seattle Parks and Recreation have retained the gymnasiums and the championship games will be held at a local University.

There will be multiple gym sites and all teams will be playing a minimum of 4 games. WBIT anticipate 1,500-1,800 visitors in Seattle, from around the United States and the world. Multiple teams from Mainland China (Shanghai, Beijing and others), Taiwan, Singapore, Jakarta, Brazil, Philippines, Hong Kong, Canada, The Netherlands, Australia, Thailand, and Chinese teams representing all parts of the United States will be attending this event.

On behalf of the state of Washington, Governor Locke has sent a welcome greeting to all Players for this event. Many local government agencies and companies have committed to supporting this event.
